| *Environmental Education Week in Thiells, New York |
|
|
|
On 15 April 2008, the Ecoflag flew in New York as Fieldstone Secondary School, in the North Rockland Central School District, sponsored its second annual Basic Environmental Awareness Training (BEAT). This event consists of a series of activities designed to raise awareness and foster activism among students and staff in anticipation of Earth Day. The program brings together many diverse groups in both the school and the community at large. GSA-New York assisted with the event and helped in linking the school district to the National Environmental Education Week campaign.
In this year's edition of BEAT the following organizations and agencies teamed up to sponsor the training that presented eight separate activities for more than 200 FSS students:
- Keep Rockland Beautiful, a chapter of Keep America Beautiful
- Fieldstone faculty volunteers
- School District Buildings and Grounds Dept.
- Cornell University Cooperative Extension - Rockland County
- Town of Haverstraw Police Dept.
- GSA New York
These groups reconvened on 18 April and were joined by the North Rockland High School Environment Club and faculty members for a cleanup effort along roadways in Thiells, NY.
The synergies created by the cooperation and interaction of these groups point the way to new possibilities for future efforts on behalf of environmental causes. The Fieldstone community and the North Rockland CSD are committed to a green future.

A sports meeting was held on 11 March 2008 at Hamasaka HS in Hyogo prefecture. The Hamasaka HS Student Council has been flying the Ecoflag since last year, but this is the first event under the councilfs new order. With the third year students graduated, the event was made of first and second year students only, with the boys playing football and kick baseball, and the girls enjoying volleyball and dodge ball.
We didnft really do any special environmental actions, but enjoyed playing sport in a natural setting and felt strongly the importance of protecting the natural environment. We will carry on actively promoting the Ecoflag Movement at future events.

|
| Shoei Joshi Gakuin High School held a student council event-“Minna no Hi” on 25 January 2008. Among the elaborate plans for the event was a panel exhibition featuring environmental messages from athletes. This has inspired a desire among the student council to not only put up displays but to take concrete environmental action. |

GSA Cuba helped to create a team of Senior High School students that are working to save our planet by carrying out activities through sport and physical culture. Photocopying the Ecoflag leaflet, the students are studying its proposals. They report their activities to the School Principal and are working hard in their local community.
