*Sadili Oval Special Olympics

GSA Kenya
The Ecoflag was in full display and in action when 37 adult participants and 33 children were involved in this year's Wheelchair and Special Olympics Workshop at the Sadili Oval on the 9th and 10th July. The workshop was run by the Malezi College Department of Sports Science, Recreation and Physical Education, together with the Sadili Oval. The activities involved training in sports for the disabled, including chess, goal ball and football, as well as fun activities related to the Ecoflag.

Wheelchair basketball, which has been successfully introduced in Kenya a few years ago by the Kenya Wheelchair Basketball Federation, was a well-attended workshop, but what attracted many was the Wheelchair Tennis, which is still at the early stages of inception and having been introduced to Kenya two years ago by Dan James (USTA) and Geoff Norton (PTR) in another workshop at Sadili 2006.

GSA Kenya

Malezi School's Basketball Team, who represented GSA and the Ecoflag, easily won the 5km schools competition at the Ngong Road Forest Run, which took place on Saturday 14th June 2008 in Nairobi Kenya. The run was to raise awareness about the need to conserve the forest, which is one of the few indigenous forests within a city in the world. The event was flagged off by World Marathoner, Paul Tergat.

Background
The Ngong Forest Sanctuary Trust, a body established to protect over 500ha of forest reserve in Ngong, is organizing a race in June this year towards the conservation of the above forest sanctuary. The run, now in its third year, is aimed at raising money and creating awareness about the existence and need to protect this sanctuary from destruction. The funds to be raised will facilitate the cost of running and conserving the forest through fence maintenance and security, among others, as mandated by the Kenya Forestry and Kenya Wildlife Services. It will also be used to encourage the interaction between the Forest management, the local community and Nairobians at large. Being one of the few indigenous forests existing within a capital city in the world, the Ngong Forest Sanctuary has an important role as Nairobi's carbon sink, as well as a recreation and education site.
