Africa Safari Junior Tennis Camp

The Safari Junior
Tennis Camp got under way at the Sadili Oval Sports Club
in Langata,Nairobi on 2 August. GSA Staff, Katsuya Otsu is
one of the
coaches taking part in the Camp that gives sports training
and environmental
education to kids living in the slums around Nairobi.
A press
conference was
held on 2 August to outlined the program to the attending
media. Taking part
in the press conference were Katsuya Otsu of GSA Tokyo, Dr.
Liz Odera of the
Sadili Oval and Eric Falt of the United Nations Environment
Programme
(UNEP). |

This event was organized in Yokohama by the NEC Kanagawa Tennis Club for
company staff. Old or unused tennis balls were collected at the event, and
as part of the Sports-Eco.Net program, they will be donating them to Karumai
Primary School in Iwate Prefecture. |

*The Second
Tokai University Lawn Tennis League SPRING OPEN TENNIS
TOURNAMENT |

The Spring Open took place over
three days from 19-26 March, and is run by
the nine groups making up the Tokai University Lawn Tennis
League. The
summer tournament goes back over twenty years, but the Spring
event is
different in that it is only open to beginners, with competitors
keeping
score themselves as a means to remember the rules and promote
fair play.
The
Ecoflag was flying courtside and participants encouraged
to consider the
environment and act accordingly, such a separating garbage,
using public
transport or car sharing whenever possible. |

| The Ecoflag picture was taken in Harare, Zimbabwe
(southern part of Africa), where we played two
tennis tournaments and also carried out a community sport and
environment training seminar (our kids
taught other kids) at the Harare Children Home for Orphans.
Dr. Liz Odera wins Humanitarian of the
Year of 2004 PTR Award.

The 5th New Year Tournament took
place at the Estolle Hotel and Tennis Club
in Togane, Chiba prefecture on 10-11 January 2004. Irako Taeko,
who runs the
Irako Tennis College and is a GSA supporter, sponsored this
yearly event.
A GSA team was among the 10 teams taking part in men's, women's
and mixed doubles matches.
The level of play was extremely high with among the athletes
taking part,
former pro players such as Isao Watanabe and former Japan champion
Osamu
Ishiguro, as well as university champions and junior players.
The Ecoflag was flying at the after party and Isao Watanabe,
a GSA Director,
addressed the participants about its significance.
Anyone up for the challenge is welcome to apply to take part
in next year's
